Early Morning - Yellowstone Park

This slide has been given the title, "Early Morning." I really enjoy this picture, especially the man with child in the foreground walking toward the geyser, it has a certain Saturday Evening Post feel about it.
This slide was not 'restored," hence the blue tones. The "restored" slide appears below. I actually prefer the cool tones of unrestored version. Well anyway, enough blah blah blahing.

These photos are from what I believe was a graduation trip, my grandmother took to California in 1934. It is here that I would like to thank my sister Jerrie for taking the time to interview and put together an oral history of my grandparents. Without this document I would rather lost from time to time.

Surprises

Well it was an eventful if not hot weekend. While cleaning up the office before our dinner party, I came across a heretofore unknown photo album. It belonged to my grandmother and contains mostly photos, from prior to her marriage. I've decided to feature these photos this week. Many are in real bad shape, and even more have had their significance lost to time.

Farmer, So Much More Than a Dot on a Map

Farmer, or at least the schoolhouse near Farmer

Well maybe not much more than a dot. In fact other than a sign pointing toward Mansfield there isn't much there, other than this building. I'm not actually sure that this building is actually in Farmer. Anyway, Farmer is not America's play land and probably could be argued that it is nothing at all.
I have passed this building many times in my life, just sitting there in a wheat field, off on the horizon. Once on the way back from a fishing trip, my Grandfather explained that it was a old schoolhouse. My cloudy childhood memory, believes that he said that it was in use through the late 1940's and he had attended school there. These facts are very likely false, but sound nice.
Today's two photos were taken 8 years ago, shortly after my mom's death. While on a road trip out to coulee country in a borrowed car.

I like this photo, for the rich color of the Kodachrome more than anything else. I don't have any idea who Jon and Jim DeFant are or what is on forehead of the kid on the left. This photo is from June 1953.

Johnson Sea Horse

Part of this project is to highlight photos that have been "found." Antique stores are full of old photos of forgotten people and places.

Today's photo is an exciting example of American photographic folk art. I call it, "Johnson Sea Horse." This photo is so bad, yet so compelling that I shelled out a buck ninety-five plus tax for it.

The Lonely Hi-way Photo

My sister once described my photography as, "Lonely Hi-way Shots." Whereas I don't really agree with her, must admit that two lane black top stretching past the horizon is a wonderful vision to me, not to mention, those forgotten or unnoticed curios off the shoulders. Okay, maybe she's right. I'd like you to take notice of this "lonely hi-way photo," its from about same time as the Camping on the Columbia photos. This is the old highway that ran up the middle of the Grand Coulee, north of Coulee City. It is now under water, inundated by Banks Lake.
